Last Saturday, the Class of 2024 was able to finally celebrate the prom they never had. Because sophomore class couldn’t experience the First Year Formal due to the pandemic, we treated to the rare Sophomore Formal.
To say the experience was highly anticipated would be an understatement. Having missed out on both our senior prom and Yale’s First Year Formal, we sophomores were eager to have an excuse to dress up and take an excessive number of photos with our friends.

During the formal, the long tables which typically occupied Commons were removed, and in its place was a spacious room for dancing, taking photos, and munching on the snacks provided by the SoCo. After a smooth check-in process by the entrance, students were able to place their coats in the Underground and then made their way up to the upstairs festivities.
Before having the chance to break a sweat from the dancing, my friends and I quickly made our way to the photo booth and smiled until our cheeks became numb. After several rounds of picture taking, the rest of the night occurred on the dance floor. While the music was questionable at times, it provided us a very necessary break from dancing and the chance to share a few inside jokes.
Personally, the highlight of the formal was bumping into friends and acquaintances whom I don’t see regularly. Although most of the interactions that night was short and fleeting as students were in a rush to dance with friends or whisked away to take photos, these unexpected interactions only added to the magical nature of the Sophomore Formal.
While saying that the Sophomore Formal is the event of the year would be an exaggeration, it was immensely fulfilling. From getting ready with friends to the post-formal pizza adventures, the shared laughs, selfies, and many hugs of the Sophomore Formal most definitely lived up to our expectations of the formal and have deepened my smile lines.
