Bulldog Days Travel Information

New Haven is in the heart of the Northeast Corridor, 70 miles from New York City.

Use the information here to plan your trip to New Haven. Bulldog Days begins Monday afternoon and ends midday Wednesday, but students may arrive late or leave early. The admissions office cannot arrange for students to be housed on campus for an additional night, but students are welcome to make arrangements on their own. Contact bulldog@yale.edu with questions. 

Note: students receiving travel support through the Yale Travel Program should await instructions before making travel arrangements. 

Train Travel

New Haven’s Union Station is one of America’s busiest passenger rail stations, with dozens of daily departures and arrivals. 

For visitors traveling from anywhere between Washington, DC and Boston, an Amtrak train to Union Station (NHV) or a local train (Metro-North, Shoreline East, CTrail) to Union Station or the State Street Station is typically the most convenient option. 

New Haven’s Union Station is approximately one mile from registration at Dwight Hall on Old Campus. A free Bulldog Days shuttle will run between Phelps Gate and Union Station every 20 minutes at the following times: 

  • Monday, April 15 – 2pm to 8pm 
  • Wednesday, April 17 – 8am to 3pm
  • Saturday, April 20 - 8am to 11am + 4:30pm to 7:30pm 

At times when the Bulldog Days Union Station shuttle is not available, please take a taxi or rideshare ($5-$10 fare) - details below.  

Air Travel & Ground Transportation

Air travelers can choose from several airports within 100 miles of campus with multiple ground transportation options.

Hartford/Springfield Bradley Airport (BDL)

Approximately 50 miles from campus, served by most major airlines. 

Ground Transportation Options:

NYC/LaGuardia Airport (LGA)

Approximately 75 miles from campus, served by all major airlines, mostly domestic flights.  

Ground Transportation Options:

  • Go Airport Shuttle (advance reservations required). Select an “arrival” reservation, round trip ticket, and “Phelps Gate, College St” as your Yale location. Enter your flight details when placing your reservation. Travel time is 1.5 - 2.5 hours depending on traffic. 
  • Metro-North Railroad in Manhattan, which offers regular departures on the New Haven Line (no reservations required) from Grand Central Terminal in midtown and the Harlem/125th St Station.
    How to reach the Metro-North Railroad from LaGuardia:

NYC/John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK)

Approximately 80 miles from campus, served by all major airlines, domestic and international flights.  

  • Go Airport Shuttle (advance reservations required). Select an “arrival” reservation, round trip ticket, and “Phelps Gate, College St” as your Yale location. Enter your flight details when placing your reservation. Travel time is 1.5 - 2.5 hours depending on traffic. 
  • Metro-North Railroad in Manhattan, which offers regular departures on the New Haven Line (no reservations required) from Grand Central Terminal in midtown and the Harlem/125th St Station.
    How to reach the Metro-North Railroad from JFK:

NYC/Newark Liberty Airport (EWR)

Approximately 95 miles from campus, served by all major airlines, domestic and international flights.  

  • Amtrak’s Northeast Regional Line (reservations required), provides direct service between EWR and New Haven’s Union Station. Use the EWR AirTrain to travel between the terminal and the rail station. Travel time is 2.5 - 3 hours.
  • Newark Airport Express bus (reservations recommended) to Grand Central Terminal and the Metro-North Railroad, which offers regular departures on the New Haven Line (no reservations required).

New Haven Tweed Airport (HVN)

New Haven’s small local airport is served by Avelo Airlines, which offers low-cost direct flights to several small cities in the southeast. Round Trip flights to New Haven during Bulldog Days are available from Raleigh/Durham, Orlando, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Sarasota, and Fort Myers. Lyft is the most convenient way to make the 15-minute journey between Tweed Airport and the Yale campus. 

Bus, Taxi, and Rideshare Options

New Haven’s Union Station is also a terminal for Greyhound and Peter Pan bus lines. A free Bulldog Days shuttle will run between Phelps Gate and Union Station every 20 minutes at the following times: 

  • Monday, April 15 – 2pm to 8pm 
  • Wednesday, April 17 – 8am to 3pm
  • Saturday, April 20 - 8am to 11am + 4:30pm to 7:30pm

Parking on and near campus
