First-Year & Transfer Application Fee Waivers

Yale will waive the $80 application fee if it would constitute a significant financial burden for the student’s family. If you wish to request a fee waiver, follow these instructions when completing the Coalition Application or Common Application online:

  1. Reply “yes” when asked “Do you intend to apply for need-based financial aid” (Coalition Application) or “Do you feel that your financial circumstances might qualify you for an application fee waiver?” (Common Application)
  2. Confirm that you meet at least one of the indicators of economic need listed in the question(s) that will follow.

Students applying to Yale as QuestBridge National College Match Finalists may share their QuestBridge application with no fee. 

If your family size and income fall within the levels listed below, you also qualify for a Yale fee waiver:

If your family income and size fall within the criteria above, follow these steps to apply with a fee waiver:

  • If applying with the Common Application select “You can provide a supporting statement from a school official, college access counselor, financial aid officer, or community leader.” You will not need to submit any supporting documentation.
  • If applying with the Coalition Application select “Yes” for the prompt “Does your annual family income fall within the Income Eligibility Guidelines for the Federal Free and Reduced Lunch Program?”
