An A Cappella Surprise!

Last weekend, one my closest friends at Yale went on a “friend spree”, perhaps in preemption of Valentine’s Day. He decided that he would take all his friends out to a show going on around Yale, and I was drawn out of the lottery last Saturday.

We were going to be watching Yale’s Mixed Company, one of the most diverse and eclectic groups on campus. In addition to having a grand repertoire of powerful soloists, they pride themselves on assimilating their unique sense of humor into their sound. For more information of the group, please visit http://www.mixedco.net/about.shtml.

I had never heard the Mixed Company before Yale, so I was more than excited. Eye-catching posters of their winter concert, cleverly named “Snow Job, Winter Jam 2011” were plastered all over the Yale Undergraduate Campus. They comprised photos of each member of the group, and had the event details in simple text. Everyone seemed to be going to the concert, and I was glad that I would be too!

Snow job did a great job that evening, putting up a 2-hour act of non-stop A Cappella and Stand-up Comedy. From a witty melee of pop sensation Ke$ha (they really emphasized the dollar sign), to a remix of Katy Perry’s California girls so that it talked about “Ivy Girls”, they had the audience on the floor in laughter, and on their feet in praise of their work.

Even more exciting, however, was that I run into one of my Professors at the show! One of my classes this semester is about South Africa, its language and identity, and it’s turning out to be one of the most interesting classes I’ve taken at Yale so far. More than a mere accumulation of knowledge, I am realizing so much more about myself, my culture, and how I think about my culture. Seeing my professor there made my class even more personal than it already was (seeing as there are only 10 of us in the class!)

A great evening out with a friend, beautiful music, rib-cracking comedy and a run-into one of my favorite Professors at Yale! What more could I ask for? Hint: (Rhetorical question to which the answer is a seven-letter word that means “no thing” :D)
