What is October Recess?

For five days in October, classes at Yale go out of session and students and faculty have a mid-semester break. Not many other schools have an October Recess built into their schedule, and I have come to really appreciate it. Last year I wasn’t really sure what to do with this short break, but now that I have seen the full range of options I have come to realize that this little mid-semester reset has a lot to offer.

The Metropolitan Opera House in New York City

The first option that many students choose for October Recess is travel. There are always Yalies in New York City around this time; people also love to visit other nearby cities like Boston or Providence. There are a lot of options for travel right in this area, and traveling by train is relatively inexpensive and accessible. October Recess is a great time to see concerts, visit friends at other nearby schools, or just take a nice trip with friends.

Lots of students also decide to go home during this time. I, personally, haven’t done this, but some people really enjoy having a few days at home and find it super relaxing.

Finally, some Yale students decide to stay on campus and get ahead or catch up on work. Having a couple days of breathing room to do work can be really helpful, especially in the middle of midterm season, which lasts for several weeks in the fall. Libraries and study spaces are all still open at this time but they are typically less crowded. Students who stay on campus typically have time to relax and spend time with friends.

This October Recess, I spent a couple of days in New York City with friends seeing a performance at the Metropolitan Opera House which was amazing. Then, I came back to New Haven, caught up on work, and relaxed with my friends. I have greatly appreciated and enjoyed this little reset, I’ve been able to have fun, get some work done, and most importantly relax.
