An Audience Member’s Perspective on Arts at Yale

When I was choosing a college, one of the major draws for Yale was its robust arts scene. While I am only tangentially an artistic person (I work in the more technical side of theater), I have always loved art and music, and I was excited to have countless opportunities to be an audience member at Yale. Here of my personal favorites ways to see great art at Yale.

Perhaps the most obvious option is the Yale Art Gallery. The gallery spans multiple blocks and includes thousands of paintings, sculptures, and artifacts. From famous Vincent Van Gogh paintings to work from contemporary African artists, the YUAG has it all. The building is stunning and it is completely free to the public. The Yale Art Gallery is one of my personal favorite spots on campus and I think every Yalie should make the effort to go there at least a few times throughout their four years.

Yale is also a musical mecca. There are dozens of student music groups including multiple bands and orchestras, acapella groups, and choirs. One of the largest groups (and one of my personal favorites) is the Yale Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra holds several concerts each year, including their Halloween Show which typically sells out in seconds. The musicians are extremely talented and seeing them in person was an experience like no other. YSO is just one of the many incredible groups and there are musical performances to enjoy every week.

Another avenue of art at Yale that I am involved with myself is theater. Probably the most prominent theatrical organization for undergraduates is the Yale Dramat, which puts on undergraduate productions with the help of professional directors and designers. Yale is also home to experimental drama groups as well as improv groups. The Yale Theater and Performance Studies seniors also put on senior thesis shows throughout both semesters. These shows are a great way to see Yale theater in action and most of the time they have free admission.

There are numerous other artistic groups from cultural dance troupes to jazz ensembles. The arts are so strong at Yale that I can find some sort of artistic experience to have every week. Since I’ve been here I’ve been able to experience world class art, music, and theater without having to step foot off campus. The arts scene at Yale has been one of my favorite parts of my experience so far and I know that while I’m here I will always be enmeshed in an artistic community even if I don’t create art myself.
