Is Yale right for me?

Paper Mario thinking with Luigi

Hello hello, reader! There are many reasons you could be reading this post right now. Perhaps you are a prospective student applying to Yale, or maybe you’ve been accepted already (congrats!). Or maybe you have fallen down a Google rabbit-hole and somehow landed here. In any case, I want to use this forum to bring up something I wondered when I was reading these blogs four years ago.

I recall opening my admissions portal, and a link somewhere led me to blog posts from “real Yale students.” I inquisitively clicked the link, and I saw a collection of posts from 2021 that are likely similar to those you are seeing now. I remember perusing a few, clicking around, and then closing my laptop. And honestly, they did not make me that much more excited about Yale.

When I was reading these blogs four years ago, I didn’t really relate to what the bloggers were saying. It made me wonder if Yale was the school for me, if I would find friends, and if other schools could be a better fit.

Now, if you are having similar thoughts, I want to affirm that that’s okay! When thinking about college, you want to weigh all the options, all the possibilities.

But, after being at Yale for almost four years now, I can say with 100% confidence that Yale was the right choice for me. And with that, I have learned that Yale is much bigger than a few blog posts.

If you’ve read other blogs, from myself or other students, hopefully you’ve enjoyed learning a bit more about a sliver of the student body. That said, I hope you know that these stories only capture the smallest fraction of all that Yale and New Haven have to offer. Our senses of humour, extracurriculars, classes, and ways of looking at the world can’t represent the entire mosaic of ideas and experiences that form the Yale student body. However, I truly believe that once people get here, they find the people that do understand them. And if your pocket of people doesn’t seem immediately visible, that’s likely because they are waiting for you.
