If you have read any of my previous posts, you know I love drama. And no, I am not simply talking about what happens on Keeping Up With the Kardashians (although I admittedly love that, too). I am talking about what happens on the stage – in the theatre!
Yale offers a virtually endless stream of opportunities to get involved with theater and performance opportunities on campus. Every semester, students organize dozens of musicals, plays, dramatic readings, comedy shows, recitals, cabarets, showcases, you name it — all of which need people both behind the scenes and in the spotlight to get going.
A screen grab from the Yale College Arts website.
There are perhaps so many ventures happening at once because all it takes to get a project started on Yale’s campus is an idea. Students are able to share their creative projects through many avenues, but one of the most popular is the Yale College Arts website. The website is essentially an online bulletin board for all things arts, where students can post information related to auditions, show dates, and opportunities for their projects. This ensures that the larger Yale community knows about your project and can get involved if possible. Even if you don’t see a post that speaks to you at the moment, you have full authorization to start any project yourself. Currently, I’m producing my own short film because I wanted to try directing something for myself, and I was tired of waiting for someone else to post an opportunity. #BeYourOwnBOSS
A lil’ still from my short film on campus.
Some of my most rewarding Yale experiences have come through scrolling on the Yale College Arts website. This fall, I was perusing the site when I saw an audition for a senior thesis project in the Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies department. Two seniors had posted that they were putting up Angels in America: Millennium Approaches in the spring as part of their final studies. Spontaneously, I decided to audition. Six months later, I’m now looking back on some of the most fun I’ve had at Yale as part of their cast.
Me being dramatic, in Angels in America.
Whether you are looking to help rig lights, host a radio show, or dance your little heart away, there are so, SO many chances at Yale to try out something creative for the first time, or the second time, or third, etc. All you have to do is be open to a little drama.
