Some Friends and their Student Jobs

As a first-generation low-income student, I appreciate of how accessible and diverse Yale’s student jobs are. While some undergraduate jobs have already been covered in a blogpost by Lydia, here are a few more that allow students to give back, have fun, and earn some money to use towards New Haven’s awesome restaurants and stores.

Alice ‘24

Major: Computer Science

Job title: Campus Tour Guide

What did you do: Share my love of Yale with campus visitors! Every week, I get to show prospective students and their families around Yale’s campus, taking them around some of Yale’s most special spots like Sterling Memorial Library, Cross Campus, the Beinecke (it has one of the only 21 full copies of the Gutenberg Bible in the world!), and Old Campus. I also get to talk about how much I love my residential college, the best college at Yale (Timothy Dwight!), and the amazing people in it.

What did you like about the job: Getting to reflect on some of my favorite Yale memories, connecting with students and families, and seeing Handsome Dan every week!

Erick ‘24

Major: Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology (B.S.) and Psychology with a concentration in Neuroscience (B.S.)

Job Title: Barista

What did you do: As a barista, I take customer’s orders, make, and serve drinks. I happen to work a good chunk of the closing shifts so I also wash the dishes, broom, and wipe down our tables, among other smaller tasks.

What did you like about the job: All of my customers are students at Yale so I get to make drinks for acquaintances, close friends, and total strangers! I also get to play music on our speaker which helps make my shifts more enjoyable.

Clara ‘24

Major: Economics and East Asian Studies

Job title: Research Assistant for Yale Initiative on Sustainable Finance

What did you do: I work on data collection and analysis for the carbon pledges of S&P 500 companies and collect relevant article sources.

What did you like about the job: I like the flexibility and how I can work in a small tight-knit team. As the result of the collaboration between Yale SOM (School of Management) and SOF (School of Forestry), I like how YISF allows students and research assistants to explore the expanding intersection of business and sustainability.

Valerie ‘24

Major: Ethnicity, Race, and Migration

Job title: Coalition of Allyship Advocates Facilitator

What did you do: As a facilitator, I work to develop workshops to present to Yale students (first-years, student organizations, peer leaders, etc.) about critical topics. For example, we’re currently developing a workshop on power, privilege, and positionality at Yale.

What did you like about the job: I enjoy this job because it provides a space for students to discuss important topics while building community.

Sai ‘24

Major: History

Job Title: Usher at the Yale School of Music

What did you do: As an usher, my job is to check tickets, greet the guests, pass out programs, and generally make sure that everything is going smoothly before the concert, during intermission, and after the concert.

What did you like about the job: One of the best parts about the job is being able to watch the concerts and amazing performers for free! The job is also quite simple and relaxed, so we often have time to do homework or other things while the event is going on.

Finally, I work as a Timothy Dwight College Webmaster. As a Webmaster, I maintain and update event listings and promotions on the Timothy Dwight website and town hall monitor. Every week, I also upload the “Notes and News” that my head of college emails to students onto the TD website. One of my favorite parts about this job is that I am able to contribute to the Timothy Dwight community! As a TD Aide, I love working with and getting to know the other TD Aides.

Student jobs are a great way for students to earn some extra money during their free time. Although finding a job at Yale may be a piece of cake, the hard part is having to choose one out of all of them!
