Hunter's Blog

Hunter is a junior in Trumbull College from Tallahassee, Florida. As an English major, she spends a considerable amount of time reading literature written before the nineteenth century. She also works in the Admissions Office and serves as a board member for Yale’s Black Solidarity Conference. Hunter enjoys saltwater fishing, playing table tennis, and participating in a jam band with her fellow Trumbullians.

Elis on Ice

Before coming to Yale, I had never attended an ice hockey game in my life.  I was familiar enough with the sport to know the basics–my dad would occasionally watch games and invite me to watch with him–but I never understood the allure of the sport.  Growing up, hockey culture was big.  I am one generation removed from the Team USA’s “Miracle on Ice,” and I grew up in the era of the Florida Panthers’ “rat trick” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnHpaVW53SM).

Twelve Colleges, One Yale

When I was a prospective student, every single Yalie that I met went on and on about how much they loved their residential colleges.  At the time I didn’t quite understand the significance of colleges within a college or what made them so special. To be honest, I didn’t remotely understand how important they were to Yale students until I received my own college assignment.

Mitakuye Oyasin: We Are All Related

In many ways, my sophomore arrival experience was quite similar to the first time I stepped on campus as a first year student.  I was still excited, a bit anxious, and in awe of the abundant buttresses and spires.  The weather was much the same and I arrived at roughly the same time.  Yet when I walked onto the Old Campus quad, I also experienced a rather nostalgic moment.  The fence railings reminded me of spontaneous snowball fights.  A cluster of oak trees took me back to memories of pickup soccer matches; we used the trunks as makeshift goal pos
