Some of you may have read my previous blog on the DJ midterm I was preparing for as part of Music 395: Composition and Performance of Music, Multimedia Art and Technology taught by Prof. Kathryn Alexander.
If not, check it out here: http://admissions.yale.edu/bulldogs-blogs/lamtharn/2012/02/04/my-midterm...
Just before Spring Break, all of us in class had the chance to perform our electronic music sets live to the class. The performance put to test our skills in clip launching, sequencing and live effects that we had been learning throughout the semester.

I had only heard about Scanning Electron Microscopes in textbooks until I saw a real one last week. Better still, the SEM was used to analyze nanoparticles I had made!

One of my favorite classes this semester is called Survey of Theater & Drama. The class tracks the development of theater from ancient religious rituals to theater in the 21st Century. As part of the class, we are studying the origins of the American musical. One of the musicals that we are looking at is George Gershwin, DuBose Heyward, and Ira Gershwin’s 1935 musical Porgy and Bess.

What happens when you house seven musical Yalies into one single suite?
You get “Suite Spot”! An ensemble made up of freshman from one single suite in Morse College!
The ensemble features everyone in my suite: Ethan on piano, Cameron on keyboard, Mark on trombone, Aaron on trumpet, Will on guitar, Brendan on shakers, and myself on electronic drums and synthesizer. It’s actually pretty rare for a group of seven randomly assigned suitemates to share a common passion for music, so this composition we helped to write together was something special indeed!

The story began on a picturesque spring day. Liang Shanbo met Zhu Yingtai, a female dressed in a boy’s disguise, at a wayside arbor. In that moment, they avowed to become sworn brothers. As students, three happy years of close affinity passed quickly and the two had to return to their homes. Zhu’s anxieties were clear: she had been arranged to marry someone else. Zhu’s protest against an undesired marriage presents the climax of the conflict. Liang confesses his longing for Zhu, but upon discovering that Zhu will be married, he died of heartbreak.

I got to celebrate a fantastic weekend at my a cappella group's annual winter jam. Traditionally Yale seniors don't sing with their underclassman a cappella group, so I was in the audience, wearing my traditional yellow bowling shirt and cheering on some of my favorite people on campus!
My best friends from the past four years were all either singing on stage or in the audience as alums! I was so excited to see graduates from all over the country come back to support such an organization that was (and still is) so important to our development at Yale.

Last weekend, one my closest friends at Yale went on a “friend spree”, perhaps in preemption of Valentine’s Day. He decided that he would take all his friends out to a show going on around Yale, and I was drawn out of the lottery last Saturday.

A capella is a big part of Yale’s culture. Whether it is a Saturday night show, a benefit concert in Sudler Hall, or just a random gig, there is always something musical happening on campus. There are three female groups, five male groups, and five mixed groups that are composed of freshmen through seniors. Each has a different style and a unique sound, but they are all awesome in their own way.
