Elis on Ice

Before coming to Yale, I had never attended an ice hockey game in my life.  I was familiar enough with the sport to know the basics–my dad would occasionally watch games and invite me to watch with him–but I never understood the allure of the sport.  Growing up, hockey culture was big.  I am one generation removed from the Team USA’s “Miracle on Ice,” and I grew up in the era of the Florida Panthers’ “rat trick” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnHpaVW53SM).

The Game or the Tailgate?

The Yale-Harvard Annual Game was on us again, and this time Yale would be hosting its enemy. I’d been looking forward to the Game all semester long, firstly because I was hoping that this would be the year in which we broke our losing streak of a few years, and secondly because I was excited about seeing all my great Harvard friends again! I went to Harvard last year for the Game, and was warmly welcomed by their students in spite of the fact that we were from opposing teams.

"The score never interested me, only the game" - Mae West

A Harvard-Yale Game Inspired Limerick:

In the city of New Haven, there is a biannual fete

Where Yale students cheer and the football team sweats

Our crimson foes arrive

After a two-hour drive

To be served a resounding defeat they shall ne'er forget*

*Well, hopefully.

My Admissions Story

First and foremost, to all those who have sent in or are about to send in their early applications– congratulations on finishing!  I can remember feeling significantly less stressed around November 1, 2009, with the weight of my three early applications no longer bearing down on me (…on another note, has it already been that long since I was a senior?!).

Hockey: ECAC Champs!

I had an amazing weekend to wrap up my spring break, following the Men's Hockey team to Atlantic City, NJ, where they clinched the ECAC championship for the second time in three years.  I've attended every single one of their home games this year, roaring out the fight song and all kinds of pump-up music with the band, as we cheer the Bulldogs on to victory.

A Runner's Haven

I am going to be sad to leave New Haven for a lot of reasons, one of which is that I now call it my home. I've lived in my apartment for the past two years and it makes me sad to think about leaving a place that has so much significance to me. Soon another Yalie is going to take over my enormous kitchen where I have done some of my finest culinary work and also where a lot of gastronomical experiments have ultimately failed.

Did I mention that Hockey's #1?

The Yale Men's Hockey team is off to another incredible season.  For the first time in the program's 116 year history, they're indisputably ranked #1 for the nation.  Wow.

I have the chance to follow them every step of the way as the Yale Precision Marching Band plays at their games throughout the winter and spring. Though as a marching band our primary focus is on football season in the fall, we keep playing Pep Band style at sporting events throughout the spring, with Hockey as one of the favorites.

How do you even describe it?  Yale Hockey is poetry. Brutal, violent poetry that slams people into glass walls.

So clearly, the only appropriate way to conduct a band at such an event is with an enormous battle axe.

My Love of Zambonis

Ok, ok, I just posted a blog. in fact it might have been less than 49 hours ago...

But I can't contain my excitement.

Yale Men's Hockey is # 1 in the nation. Not in the state or region, but the nation.

The Yalie in Crimson Masses

The craze and buzz created by the annual Harvard-Yale Game is crazy! From the daunting T-shirt designs spawning themes such as “Harvard: The Anti-social Network”, to the thousands of Vuvuzelas that found themselves on both Yale and Harvard campuses, the enthusiasm was palpable. The Game had drawn enemy lines, and wearing Blue on crimson campus was pretty much a death sentence. All right, you’ve caught me there - I’m exaggerating… But it was pretty intense!

Quidditch

Although (most) students don’t take platform nine and three quarters to get to Yale, there is definitely a Harry Potter culture on campus. Every Sunday morning, the Quidditch team practices their golden snitch catching skills right outside of Sterling Memorial Library on Cross Campus! This past weekend, our muggles placed 16th out of 46 schools in the Quidditch World Cup held in New York City’s Dewitt Clinton Park. Check out these photos from their Sunday morning practice!
